Story of Fatema in english

I am Fatema, 70 years old. Late Ab. Malek is the name of my husband. I have no permanent residence, living now in a house of Late-Meherchan, Village-Noyachar, Savar, Dhaka. My home district was Shariotpur. After marriage, I migrated to Dhaka about 50 years ago and was living with my husband at Mohammadpur area.
I have one son (38 yrs) and 1 daughter (33 yrs). All are married. I have lost my husband 33 years ago when my daughter was about 3 months only. After died of my husband, I had been working as day laborer at different houses.
I lost my sight 2 years ago and I was totally blind. I couldn’t see anything. At first, I took treatment from a village doctor but I could not see any improvement in my eyes. I couldn’t get touch of a MBBS doctor due to my poverty. I heard from one of my neighbor that my disease was treatable, but I didn’t take treatment due to high cost.
Due to blindness, I couldn’t do my job properly. Therefore, I had lost my job (day labor). Nobody helped me specially son and daughter for my daily living. Then I joined for begging occupation. Going blind was a big problem for me. I couldn’t see my surroundings and most of the time I sat idly in my home. I couldn’t earn any money with begging, and I felt guilty that I was a burden of my family.
I heard from local UP member that a big doctor will come to our village and they will give us partial free treatment. But I had no ability to pay for treatment even registration fee (20/-). Then the UP member assured me to do help. Then I went to Eye Camp held at Shamlapur High School and selected me as a cataract patient by the doctor.

Before having surgery I was a bit confused that I’ll really get my vision once again? I was a little scare before surgery, but since I couldn’t see I wasn’t too afraid! One of my neighbors had counseled me regarding surgery then I got confident to undergo surgery. I had no money for transport cost. Then on 27 January 2014 morning, I started for Prime Bank Eye Hospital by walking. The doctor sir reexamined my eyes and admitted in the hospital on same day. They operated my left eye first and advised for surgery right eye two month later. The first time when the bandages were removed the first thing I saw all patients in my room. At the time I was so happy and I was crying.

Now I can see everything! Mentally, I am very much happy and have my strength. Now I will work again and look after my family. In future, I want to make tea with a small shop.

I don’t know who has paid my surgery cost. I pray to Allah for him/them. Now for the name of Allah I am very happy, I can move and do anything.

I think that eyes are good wealth and should all to take care of eyes. Those who are visually impaired people come to me or I found, I will advise them to go to Prime Bank Eye Hospital at Dhanmondi for better treatment.
